A Dark Night

From The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

In a gloomy night with a heavy heart I was reading Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner when I got to this beautiful poetic passage that I so related to. I’ve rearranged it as a poem below. Perhaps “a dark night” would be an appropriate name for it.

Dark Night

I want to tear myself from this place,
from this reality,
rise up like a cloud and float away,
melt into this humid summer night and dissolve somewhere far,
over the hills.

But I am here,
my legs blocks of concrete,
my lungs empty of air,
my throat burning.
There will be no floating away.
There will be no other reality tonight.
